Urban Compost Resources

Welcome to our knowledge hub

We provide resources to help individuals, gardeners, and communities build living soil, reduce waste, and support sustainable urban ecosystems.

Science-Based Composting & Soil Health

At Compost Toronto, our approach goes beyond traditional composting.

We apply principles from soil biology, microbiology, and regenerative agriculture to create biologically active compost that restores soil ecosystems.

Our work is grounded in applied research, including studies in vermicomposting and organic waste transformation, demonstrating how different organic inputs impact:

  • Soil organic matter

  • Nutrient availability (Nitrogen, Carbon, Potassium)

  • Microbial activity

  • Soil structure and water retention

By combining scientific knowledge with community practice, we help rebuild healthy soils across Toronto.

Why Composting Matters in Toronto

Urban composting is a powerful tool to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges in Toronto:

  • Organic waste diversion from landfills

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

  • Soil regeneration in urban environments

  • Support for local food systems and community gardens

Compost is not waste management — it is ecosystem restoration.
